They are also cheaper than their chrome counterparts, typically by about $1 for a C‐90 cassette. Ferric tapes may lack the glossy highs of chrome, but the best of them offer a well‐balanced and musically satisfying frequency spectrum with notable overall smoothness. Their bright, punchy sound is often preferred by rock and jazz fanciers. In general, chrome tapes provide stronger highs but tend to be a trifle weak on the lows and and more prone to distortion at high volume levels. Each has advantages and drawbacks, thereby furnishing grist to nonstop arguments. One is ferric oxide (Fe02), which is a kind of iron rust.
